Tuesday, October 6, 2009
Where: Jung Society of Washington Library
Tuesday, October 6, 2009
Time: 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM EST
What: Course
Who: Heidi Lindemann and Michael Perry
When: Six Tuesdays
Fees: $150.00, members; $175.00, nonmembers; $125.00, seniors over 65 and full-time students

"The factors which come together in the coniunctio are conceived as opposites, either confronting one another in enmity or attracting one another in love."
Jung's opening sentence in the Mysterium points to alchemy as a means to self-inquiry. Contained within us are both our most vitriolic thoughts and the aqua vitae - the living water. Are they one, or opposite? The alchemical term V.I.T.R.I.O.L. itself will help us explore this question. The term is an acronym for a Latin phrase that translates: "Enter deep into the interior of the earth, and you will find the secret stone." It is through the doorway of the greatest trials (the fiery core of earth) that we discover, and polish, the secret and sacred stone.

This course, Uncovering the Philosopher's Stone, will run con-currently with Weaver Stevens' course on the Mysterium Coniunctionis to help elucidate the value of basic alchemical symbolism and its relevance to your life. We will consider the alchemical symbolism of Jung's carved stone at Bollingen, along with a number of images from alchemical texts such as the Rosarium Philosophorum. The text Alchemy & Mysticism: The Hermetic Museum by Alexander Roob (Taschen Books, available online for under $10.00) is highly recommended. This book contains images useful for both this class and for a deeper reading of Jung's Mysterium, which does not include the alchemical images to which he refers.

We intend to offer CEUs for this program.
Swami Abhipadananda (Heidi Elizabeth Lindemann) and Swami Jyotir Vakyananda (Michael Anthony Perry) are lineage holders in the Kriya Yoga tradition and are authorized to initiate and teach Kriya Yoga and its related teachings. The Swami order is one of the oldest, continuous, living initiatory systems extant. Ordained priests, they perform all traditional sacraments and initiations; they derive great meaning from making Indian yogic teachings accessible to western minds. They are a married couple who reside the Washington metropolitan area and teach and write around the United States and in Europe.

For one who, like the creator of Alice, would appreciate exploring a land underneath the surface of the earth or a land on the other side of the mirror, you might consider joining other intrepid souls to explore together this masterpiece, the last of Jung's books. It takes the position that the alchemists possessed this same human psyche that we enjoy today and that by viewing the symbolic alchemical patterns we will gain a significant understanding of the symbolic patterns that infuse our current lives. The book is long and difficult; therefore, we will study it throughout four sessions of six classes each: this fall, next spring and fall, and the spring of 2011. This fall we will limit ourselves to Parts I and II. For the first class, the Foreword and to page six is sufficient. Supportive reading: AION (volume IX/2), vols. XII and XIII, and vol. XVI, pp. 163ff.

We intend to offer CEUs for this program.

Weaver L. Stevens,
M.Div., M.Litt., received his Batchelor of Arts from UCLA, his Masters of Divinity from Virginia Seminary, and his Masters of Literature from Oxford University. Weaver is a practicing Jungian psychoanalyst in the Washington, D.C., area and is a member of NAAP, the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. Weaver has taught several courses for us; they are always well received.

What: Lecture
Who: Michael Conforti
When: Friday
Fees: $20.00 members in advance; $25.00 general

From the individual and personal to the collective and global, we find ourselves swimming in a sea of archetypal influences, many of which we remain unaware of throughout our life. The protagonist in fairy tales, legends, and spiritual stories is often under a curse or spell. Redemption, the breaking of these spells, occurs through magic, differentiation, prayer, and always through a significant amount of inner work. In this lecture, Dr. Conforti will present material from his forthcoming book, Hidden Presences: Spells, Possessions, and the Complex and from his recent paper, "Redemption and Healing." He will discuss those experiences and how eternal wisdom traditions and Jungian analysis help us to work with these dynamics.

We intend to offer CEUs for this program.

Michael Conforti, Ph.D., is a Jungian analyst, author, and founder/director of the Assisi Institute. His work has resulted not only in a training institute based on his discoveries, but also the development of a new discipline, Archetypal Pattern Analysis. He lectures nationally and internationally and applies his insights as a sought-after consultant to businesses, government institutions, and the film industry. Dr. Conforti served as a script consultant on the recently released film, Pride and Glory, and is the author of Field, Form and Fate: Patterns in Mind, Nature & Psyche and Threshold Experiences: The Archetype of Beginnings.

Who: Michael Conforti
When: Saturday
Fees: $50.00, members; $75.00, nonmembers; $40.00 full-time students and seniors over 65

In this workshop, we take a trans-disciplinary look at the workings of the complex, its relationship to archetypes, its effect on the personality, and ways for understanding and integrating its directives and mandates. Underpinning both the archetype and the complex is the "Objective Psyche," whose language and movements generally run contrary to that of the ego. Our discussion will include examples from dreams, clinical material, literature, and film.

The chakra system is discussed extensively in yoga practice, energy medicine, and also in archetypal and developmental psychology. How do we "know" who we are? How do life cycles force us to change and redefine who we believe we are? From the "root chakra" -- our collective or tribal identity -- to the "crown chakra" -- our cosmic identity, we progress in our development through different archetypal stages. First, taking delight in our own bodies and physical sensation, then claiming our personal power, then discovering love and our identity in relationships, finding our individual creative voice, and (re)discovering our connection to the universal ALL -- the chakra system is a rainbow bridge that connects our physical, emotional, archetypal, and cosmic selves. Our bodies are the instrument, and our embodied lives tell the story.

In this course we will learn about the chakra system, these different archetypal stages, how and where we get "hung up" or derailed from our unfolding journey -- wounded, hurt, confused, lost. Using clinical and real-life examples, we will also explore how we can creatively heal these wounds, get "back on track," and how each chakra represents a different developmental opportunity Students are encouraged to obtain a copy of Eastern Body, Western Mind by Dr. Anodea Judith before this course begins.\

We intend to offer CEUs for this program.

Be your own "intuitive consultant." This presentation will explore how to use a pendulum to seek guidance on questions relating to your business, health, relationships and more. People have dowsed to find water since ancient times when human survival depended on this innate skill. Among the topics discussed will be selecting and handling a pendulum, preparation, centering, and the nuances of asking questions. Learn how to use a pendulum to balance your chakras, discover potential health issues, explore new business opportunities and enhance your decision-making.

Kathryn Klvana, an expert dowser and certified Reiki II practitioner, has taught many people the simple art of the pendulum. A member of the American Society of Dowsers, she is currently at work on a book about dowsing. Throughout the year, she gives intuitive readings and teaches workshops on dowsing.
