Somatic psychology is a relatively new and emerging field that focuses on the relationship between the body and the mind; the discoveries in the field of neuroscience leave no doubt that our thoughts, feelings, and emotions have an immediate impact on cells, tissues, glands, and organ systems. This approach has taught us a great deal about electrical and biochemical manifestations in the brain and nervous system, as well as speculations about the nature of consciousness itself, but in depth psychology we are concerned about the relationship between the Self and Psyche as the organizing principle for body-mind experiences.

Jung relied on the teachings from ancient Vedic India for his notions about the Self, and in this course we will explore the teachings of Sânkhya Darshan, a philosophy of creation and evolution and one of the six systems of Vedic philosophy. Sânkhya is an elegant philosophical system that describes our relationship to the phenomenal world in terms of our own personal experience. We will explore the nature of Purusha and Prakriti (Self and Psyche), as well as ego, mind, body, and soul, in terms of Sankhya Darshan and Jung's depth psychology, and we will soon see why this philosophical system became the basis of the Ayurvedic medical cosmology.

For this program, we intend to offer CEUs for Social Workers.
